Sleep issues, hot flashes, mood changes, heavy periods and pelvic health concerns are worth asking about.

Washington’s recent menopause workplace order brought new attention to something many women already know: perimenopause and menopause can affect daily life, work, sleep, mood and confidence.

The good news is that support may already be available through your BHT benefits.

If your employer offers Nice Healthcare through Business Health Trust, you do not have to wait until symptoms feel unmanageable. You can start with Nice.

What symptoms are worth asking about?

Perimenopause and menopause do not look the same for everyone. Symptoms can be easy to brush off, especially when life is busy.

Nice can be a good place to start if you are dealing with:

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Hot flashes or night sweats
  • Brain fog or trouble focusing
  • Mood changes, anxiety or irritability
  • Irregular, heavy or changing periods
  • Menstrual migraines
  • Low energy
  • Pelvic discomfort or bladder leaks
  • Questions about whether your symptoms may be connected

You do not need to have it all figured out before you ask for help. That is the point. Nice clinicians can listen, review your symptoms and help you understand possible next steps.

How Nice can help

Nice Healthcare gives eligible members access to care without the usual friction.

You can connect with a Nice clinician virtually. In the Puget Sound and Spokane areas, most workers on BHT benefits can also have Nice come to their home or office to draw blood for labs when needed.

Nice clinicians can help with:

  • Reviewing symptoms
  • Discussing whether perimenopause or menopause may be part of the picture
  • Ordering labs when appropriate
  • Talking through treatment options
  • Prescribing medication when clinically appropriate
  • Coordinating next steps if specialty care is needed

When a Nice clinician prescribes a medication on the Nice no-cost medication list, members can pick it up at their usual pharmacy for $0.

Common medication options that may come up

This is not medical advice. Every person’s health history is different, and the right option should be discussed with a clinician.

As of June 2026, several medications on the Nice no-cost medication list may be relevant to perimenopause and menopause care when prescribed by Nice.

Examples include:

  • Hormone therapy options: estradiol and progesterone. These may be used for symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and sleep disruption. Familiar names may include Estrace and Prometrium.
  • Progestin options: medroxyprogesterone acetate, often associated with Provera. This may be used as part of certain hormone therapy plans or for cycle-related concerns.
  • Birth control options that may also support some symptoms: several common estrogen/progestin combinations and 91-day cycle options. Depending on the person, these may help with contraception, irregular periods, heavy bleeding, menstrual migraines or other cycle-related symptoms. Familiar names may include Yaz, Yasmin, Aviane, Seasonale and others.
  • Non-hormonal options: venlafaxine, escitalopram, paroxetine and clonidine. These may be used for mood or anxiety symptoms, and in some cases may also help with hot flashes or night sweats. Familiar names may include Effexor, Lexapro, Paxil and Catapres.

Brand names are included only as familiar examples. Nice’s no-cost medication list is based on generic medications and the specific forms and doses available when prescribed by a Nice clinician.

Do not overlook pelvic floor symptoms

Perimenopause and menopause are not only about hot flashes.

Some women also notice pelvic health changes, such as bladder leaks, pelvic pressure, discomfort, or changes that make exercise, intimacy or daily movement harder to enjoy.

Nice Physical Therapy can help with pelvic health concerns virtually. That means you can work with a licensed physical therapist by video or chat, get a guided plan and learn exercises you can do at home.

Virtual pelvic floor therapy may be worth asking about if you are dealing with:

  • Leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise
  • Pelvic discomfort or pressure
  • Core or hip weakness
  • Pain or discomfort with movement
  • Changes after pregnancy, childbirth or menopause
  • Questions about whether pelvic floor therapy could help

You do not have to guess your way through it. A Nice physical therapist can help you understand what is going on and build a plan that fits your life.

A real-life example

Optional quote, once approved:

“I was struggling with sleep, and my regular doctor recommended taking more melatonin. But it wasn’t helping. I had also been told I was probably too young for perimenopause. When I met with Nice, the clinician listened, helped me connect the dots and prescribed a medication I could pick up for free at my regular pharmacy.”

Why this matters now

Washington’s new executive order does not change what many women are already experiencing. It does make the conversation harder to ignore.

Many women are dealing with symptoms during some of their busiest years: leading teams, raising families, caring for others and managing full lives. Feeling “off” does not mean you just have to push through.

If you have Nice through your BHT benefits, use it.

Start the visit. Ask the question. Bring up the symptoms you are tempted to minimize.

You may have more options than you think.
