4 Tips to Protect Your Skin

The sun can damage unprotected skin in as little as 15 minutes. Follow these 4 tips from Premera Blue Cross to protect your skin:

  1. Make sure you’re covered. Wear clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block UV light.
  2. Wear sunscreen. Apply a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 every 2 hours and after you swim or sweat.
  3. Seek shade. Limit your sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  4. Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. Their UV rays can be stronger than those from the sun.

Resources to Help Small Businesses Comply with Seattle’s New Commuter Benefits Ordinance

Another ordinance is on the horizon that could affect small businesses based in Seattle. Starting Jan. 1, 2020, businesses with more than 20 employees will be required under the city’s Commuter Benefits Ordinance to offer their employees the opportunity to make a monthly pre-tax payroll deduction for transit or vanpool expenses.

For Seattle employers not already providing a commuter benefit that meets this new criteria, Business Health Trust has resources available to help its members.

Through its partnership with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, companies enrolled in Business Health Trust have access to discounts through Chamber partners including Commute Seattle, which can work with you to develop a cost-effective commute program that satisfies regulatory requirements.

More than just a benefits solution, Business Health Trust advocates for small business insurance needs in Washington. We are vigilant about staying on top of changes in the small business health insurance market and advocating for changes that benefit small businesses — nationally, and at the state and local level.

In 2017, suicide claimed the lives of more than 47,000 people in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Suicide affects people of all ages, genders, races, and ethnicities.

Suicide is complicated and tragic, but it can be preventable. Knowing the warning signs for suicide and how to get help can help save lives.

5 steps you can take to #BeThe1To help someone in emotional pain

ASK: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” It’s not an easy question but studies show that asking at-risk individuals if they are suicidal does not increase suicides or suicidal thoughts.

KEEP THEM SAFE: Reducing a suicidal person’s access to highly lethal items or places is an important part of suicide prevention. While this is not always easy, asking if the at-risk person has a plan and removing or disabling the lethal means can make a difference.

BE THERE: Listen carefully and learn what the individual is thinking and feeling. Research suggests acknowledging and talking about suicide may in fact reduce rather than increase suicidal thoughts.

HELP THEM CONNECT: Save the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s number in your phone so it’s there when you need it: 1-800-273-TALK (8255). You can also help make a connection with a trusted individual like a family member, friend, spiritual advisor, or mental health professional.

STAY CONNECTED: Staying in touch after a crisis or after being discharged from care can make a difference. Studies have shown the number of suicide deaths goes down when someone follows up with the at-risk person.

Considering Cutting Down On Drinking?

The first step, of course, is to decide whether cutting down or quitting is best for you. See these considerations and discuss different options with a doctor, a friend, or someone else you trust.

Thinking about cutting back? Here are some tips to try, small changes that can make a big difference. Choose two or three to try in the next week or two. It may help to have reminders to reinforce your decision to make a change, such as automated smartphone alerts that you send yourself.

Thinking about quitting? One size doesn’t fit all, and it’s important to find options that appeal to you. Start by visiting the choose your approach page. Here you’ll find links to self-help strategies, a helpful publication about treatment options, and information about professional help and social support.

Changing habits such as smoking, overeating, or drinking too much can take a lot of effort, and you may not succeed with the first try. Setbacks are common, but you learn more each time. Each try brings you closer to your goal. Whatever course you choose, give it a fair trial.
